Lenexa, KS Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

The set-out rule is in Section 2-11-D-2 of the Lenexa City Code. No person may place or store any solid waste, recyclable or yard waste container in front of the building setback line or existing building line on real property or public rights-of-way in a residential area. The exception is timing: on the day of collection, or up to twenty-four (24) hours before the designated weekly pickup time, containers can be placed at or near the street curb. Because the window runs from the designated pickup time, a Tuesday morning pickup means Monday morning is the earliest a container can go out.

The same sentence adds a container standard. Each type of refuse must be kept in suitable containers or disposal bags, constructed and maintained so as to prevent the dispersal of the refuse stored inside. Loose bags that spill into the street or a neighbor's yard fall outside that standard.

The first paragraph of Section 2-11-D-2 covers where containers live the rest of the week. Residential solid waste, recyclable and yard waste containers are stored on the residential premises, at sites that are well drained, fully accessible to collection equipment, public officers and fire inspection personnel, and screened as set forth in Title 4. Under the Unified Development Code's outdoor storage rules for residential property, an authorized trash container is designed and manufactured for solid waste, leak proof and waterproof, closed at all times except when depositing or removing waste, light weight, sturdy, and not more than 90 gallons in capacity.

The hauler's own container duty is in Section 2-11-D-1: each hauler must give every residential customer a lidded container for solid waste. Collection within 200 feet of residential areas cannot start before 7:00 A.M. under Section 2-11-B-10.
