Lenexa, KS Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Article 2-11-E of the Lenexa City Code now contains one operative section on bulky waste, Section 2-11-E-1. It says that beginning on or before January 1, 2013, each refuse hauler licensed to provide residential solid waste collection shall offer collection of bulky waste to each residential customer a minimum of one time per year, with the date of the collection scheduled by the refuse hauler and the customer. The cost of the bulky rubbish and waste collection is included in the base service charge and not an optional service, so residents do not pay a separate fee to the hauler for the yearly pickup.

What counts as bulky waste is defined in Section 2-11-M-2: items of refuse too large to be placed in solid waste containers, including but not limited to appliances, furniture, tires, large auto parts, trees, branches and stumps which are not collected as part of a refuse hauler's routine periodic collection service.

The City also runs a resident-only backstop. Section 2-11-J-1 authorizes the City to periodically provide public dumpster locations for the disposal of yard waste and bulky waste. Lenexa residents may be charged a minimal per-load fee as adopted by ordinance or resolution, and the City Council designates locations and duration. Section 2-11-J-2 prohibits nonresidents from depositing any type of solid waste in those dumpsters.

Because the Code does not let large items wait in the yard, plan the pickup date around removal. The Unified Development Code's residential outdoor storage rules expressly prohibit outdoor storage of appliances, furniture or items not manufactured for outdoor use, and an item not specifically permitted counts as stored if it stays on the property, unenclosed or unscreened, for more than forty-eight (48) hours. The older bulky waste routes, collection requirements and failure-to-comply sections (2-11-E-2 through 2-11-E-5) were repealed effective January 1, 2012.
