East Orange, NJ Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

City Code § 156-5, added February 24, 2020 by Ordinance No. 7-2020, caps how much bulky trash a property can put out on any single bulky collection day. No residential source may dispose of more than three bulky items on a single bulky trash collection day, and no commercial source may dispose of more than six bulky items on a single bulk trash collection day. Where the bulky items consist of lumber, scrap wood or branches, the material must be cut to a length of four feet or less and placed into a bundle before being set out.

This section replaced older recycling and yard-waste provisions: an editor's note explains that former §§ 156-5 through 156-5.3, covering mandatory source separation, recyclables removal and yard waste placement, were repealed April 9, 2012 by Ordinance No. 10-2012, with that subject matter now governed by the separate Article II, Recycling, of Chapter 156 (see §§ 156-16 through 156-30). Bulky items excluded from the ordinary curbside limits under § 156-2.1C, such as furniture, bound carpet and padding, and white goods, are the items this bulk collection day system is designed to handle.

Excess or improperly bundled bulky material left beyond the item limits is treated as a solid waste placement violation under the article's general enforcement and penalty scheme in § 156-15, enforced jointly by the Water Department, Public Works Department, Property Maintenance Department and Health Department, with fines starting at $200 for a first offense and escalating to $1,000 with discontinued collection service for repeat violations.
