East Orange, NJ Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Chapter 156 governs residential trash and recycling collection in the City of East Orange. § 156-2 requires the owner, agent, lessee, tenant or occupant of every dwelling to keep sufficient covered receptacles on the premises for accumulated solid waste, unless the property uses an equivalent method like incineration or compaction. A 'suitable receptacle for solid waste collection' is capped at 35 gallons and 100 pounds when full, with handles, or a sealed plastic bag up to 35 gallons, 18 inches across and 26 inches high; paper bags and cardboard boxes don't count. § 156-3 controls timing: nothing may go to the curb, sidewalk or right-of-way before 5:00 p.m. the day before the scheduled collection, and the empty receptacle must come back in within two hours of collection for commercial sources and residential buildings with four or more units, or within seven hours for residential sources with four or fewer units. § 156-4A adds material rules for residential sources: recyclables must be separated on the City's published schedule, loose wood and tree limbs cut to four-foot lengths in bundles of 25 pounds or less, grass clippings and similar debris bagged to no more than 75 pounds, and leaves, dirt, stones, broken concrete and other construction debris left uncollected by the authorized hauler. § 156-5 caps bulky-item disposal at three items per residential collection day and six for commercial sources. The Municipal Recycling Coordinator, appointed by the Mayor, enforces the recycling half of the chapter.
