Mount Prospect, IL Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 19.202.A.9.e of the Mount Prospect Village Code carves bulk items out of the container requirement. The heading reads Bulk Items; No Receptacle Necessary, and the text says containers are not required for discarded household appliances, furniture, brush bundles, construction debris and other items as described in the most recent edition of the village "Solid Waste Services" booklet. Such items must be neatly placed or stacked alongside approved receptacles for collection. Placement alongside the cart is the rule: items are not tossed loose in the parkway, and they are not left in a heap.

The exception in the general rule points here. Subsection A.6 forbids placing any solid waste outside a building unless it is in an approved receptacle, but it expressly excepts items disposed of under A.9.e. Timing still applies to bulk pieces: subsection A.4 bars any receptacle or other discarded items from the parkway or alley before four thirty o'clock P.M. on the day before the designated collection day.

The booklet is the place for the detailed item list. Section 19.201.B authorizes the village manager to provide additional rules in a booklet made available without charge, and names the current edition "Solid Waste Services."

Smaller do it yourself debris has a container path. Under A.9.a, Village furnished green wheeled carts hold garbage, refuse, waste, rocks and building materials resulting from do it yourself projects, and other items of similar nature that do not exceed the size of the approved receptacle. There is no limit as to the number of such containers a residential dwelling unit can use.

If an owner fails to dispose of waste properly and the contractor bills the Village for cleanup, § 19.201.C makes the owner pay the charge plus an administrative fee set in appendix A, division II.
