West Bloomfield, MI Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

The Township Code defines 'bulk item' in Sec. 13-17 as large pieces of furniture, bed springs, mattresses, large appliances such as washers, dryers, air conditioners, refrigerators, and hot water heaters, plumbing fixtures like water closets, toilets, bathtubs, and sinks, carpet and pad, storm doors and windows, lawn furniture, railroad ties, and fence parts or sections no larger than three feet by eight feet and fence posts no larger than four inches by four inches by eight feet, along with other similarly large household items. Because West Bloomfield runs its residential trash program through a single designated hauler under contract with the township (Sec.

13-16(b)), bulk item pickup is not left to a private hauler's discretion: Sec. 13-35 makes collection and disposal of bulk items, alongside solid waste, recyclables, and yard clippings, a mandatory bid specification and contract term for whichever hauler wins the township's competitive bid. The township board approves that contract award under Sec. 13-34, and the bid specifications in Sec. 13-35 also require the hauler to carry performance security, in the form of a letter of credit or bond payable to the township, to guarantee the contracted service is actually delivered.

Because the code folds bulk items into the same weekly curbside program covering regular trash, recyclables, and yard clippings under Sec. 13-28, residents should check the township's published pickup rules and resolution, adopted under Sec. 13-29(e), for any specific scheduling or tagging requirements the hauler's contract imposes for large-item pickup.
