West Bloomfield, MI Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Sec. 13-17 of the Township Code defines yard clippings as leaves, grass clippings, lake weeds, garden debris, shrubbery, and brush, tree, or plant trimmings under four feet in length and two inches in diameter that can be composted; the definition specifically excludes stumps, agricultural waste, animal waste, roots, and sewage sludge. Sec. 13-29(c) sets the preparation standard for what goes to the curb: twigs, brush, and branches up to two inches in diameter must be tied into bundles no more than four feet long and eighteen inches in diameter, while all other yard clippings must go into containers or paper bags clearly marked as yard clippings.

Yard clippings ride the same weekly curbside program as trash and recyclables under Sec. 13-28(a), collected by the township's single designated hauler, and Sec. 13-20 requires that yard clippings never be commingled with solid waste or other recyclables in storage. Landscaping companies get a narrow exclusion under Sec. 13-28(d), letting them haul yard clippings from their own customers' properties instead of using the township hauler, as long as they comply with the state's Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act, Part 115. Separately, Sec. 11-78(c) forbids burning yard clippings anywhere in the township regardless of permit status, a rule enforced independently of the collection program, and Sec.

13-21 duplicates that ban within the solid waste chapter by prohibiting open burning of leaves or yard clippings along with other trash. Residents who commingle yard clippings with solid waste or set out oversized brush bundles risk having the material left uncollected by the designated hauler.
