Lafayette, IN Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Chapter 6.07 of the Lafayette Municipal Code, rewritten by Ord. No. 2025-06 (Exh. A) and adopted March 3, 2025, makes residential trash pickup a city function rather than a subscription service. Section 6.07.030 puts collection squarely in the hands of the City of Lafayette Sanitation Department, which removes waste from private dwelling units at the city's expense and on the intervals it establishes. To support that mandate, § 6.07.040 issues containers free of charge: a single-unit household, and any building with up to three residential units, gets one 96-gallon recycling container and one 64-gallon waste container per unit, while a four-unit building receives four 64-gallon waste containers.

Once a residential building reaches five or more units, or the property is commercial or industrial, § 6.07.040(C) removes it from city service entirely, shifting the burden to the property owner to contract private hauling. The containers themselves stay city property under § 6.07.040(E) and must remain at the address where they were issued. Because the schedule is set administratively by the Sanitation Department rather than fixed in the code, residents track their pickup day through the department rather than a citywide calendar printed in the ordinance.

Landlords bear responsibility for tenant compliance under § 6.07.020, and any failure to follow the chapter's collection terms exposes the property to the penalty set out in § 6.07.990.
