Lafayette, IN Trash & Recycling: Pickup Rules & Schedules (2026)

Section 6.07.060(A), enacted by Ord. No. 2025-06 (Exh. A) effective March 3, 2025, gives Lafayette residents a defined three-part window for curbside collection. Waste, recyclables and yard waste may be set out starting at 2:00 pm the day immediately before the designated collection date, must be at the curb no later than 6:00 am on collection day itself, and the emptied containers must come back off the curb by 9:00 pm that same evening. Subsection (D) then requires that all waste be securely placed in a plastic bag, tightly sealed to prevent leaks, spills, or contamination, before it goes into the city-issued waste container.

Subsection (E) puts the burden squarely on the resident: any unbagged waste left outside the recycling and waste containers is the responsibility of the owner or resident to remove and properly dispose of, meaning the Sanitation Department is not obligated to collect loose material dumped beside the cart. Because § 6.07.020 holds the dwelling unit's owner liable for a tenant's violations, landlords should make sure tenants understand both the collection-day timing and the bagging requirement, since the same general penalty in § 6.07.990 applies to a missed timing window as to unbagged waste left at the curb.
