Full Breakdown

Las Vegas Municipal Code 9.08.100(D) bars placing, keeping, storing or locating any solid waste or recyclables container on multiple-dwelling, commercial or industrial premises within the right-of-way of a street, sidewalk or alley. Where an enclosure was required as part of development approval, or one already exists on the property, the dumpster has to be stored inside it. Single-family and duplex properties get a narrower rule under 9.08.100(C): carts and containers are banned from the right-of-way and front yard except from 2 p.m. the day before collection until midnight of collection day. Code enforcement and Las Vegas Metro Police both have authority to enforce the section.

Violations & Fines

Violations are enforced by the City's code enforcement function and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police under 9.08.100(F); the general penalty for Title 9 offenses applies where a specific fine isn't listed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a business keep its dumpster on the sidewalk or in the alley?
No. LVMC 9.08.100(D) makes it unlawful to place, keep, store or locate a solid waste container in the right-of-way of a street, sidewalk or alley on commercial, industrial or multi-dwelling premises.
Does a Las Vegas business need a dumpster enclosure?
Only if one was required in the property's development approval, or already exists on-site: the code then requires the dumpster be stored inside it.
