Wellington, FL Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Section 6.4.1.A.4 of the Land Development Regulations requires dumpsters wherever individual trash collection or indoor storage isn't provided, and sets village-wide standards for every area or receptacle used to store or dispose of trash, debris, garbage, or vegetation, including dumpsters and trash compactors. Access to indoor or outdoor collection areas must be designed into the site so collection vehicles can maneuver without excessive turning or backing up. Any dumpster located within or adjacent to a residential property line must be set back at least 50 feet.

Every dumpster or receptacle must be visually screened by a solid opaque enclosure matching the architectural character of the project or its principal buildings, with an opaque gate on the open end that stays closed except during pickup or when someone is actively using it. The enclosure must be landscaped with shrubs or hedges on every side that doesn't have a gate, and that landscaping has to be maintained at the same height as the enclosure itself. These village-wide design standards sit in ULDC Article 7, Chapter 4, alongside the Village's storm-shutter, awning, dock, and fence-and-wall standards, and apply on top of the separate curbside placement and screening rules for garbage cans and dumpsters found in Code of Ordinances Sections 13-2 and 13-3.

A site plan or building permit application that doesn't meet the setback, screening, or vehicle-access standards will be rejected during Planning, Zoning and Building Department review.
