Troy, MI Trash & Recycling: Holiday Pickup Schedule (2026)

Troy Public Works prints a list headed "2026 Observed Holidays" on its Refuse & Recycling page and again on its Refuse page. It opens with the standing rule: "When a holiday occurs on a weekday (Monday - Thursday) collection for the holiday and remaining days of that week will be delayed by one day." The entries run from 1/1/26 through 1/1/27. For the three holidays readers ask about, the list reads: Thanksgiving, Thursday 11/26/26, "Only Thursday's collection delayed one day"; Christmas, Friday, 12/25/26, "No collection delay"; and New Year's Day 2027, Friday 1/1/27, "No collection delay". Memorial Day and Labor Day, both Mondays, read "Collection delayed one day all week".

The Refuse page states that "Refuse Collection runs Monday through Thursday starting at 7am and running until complete." Because the posted collection week ends on Thursday, the two Friday holidays sit outside it, which matches the "No collection delay" entries. Thanksgiving falls on the last posted collection day, which fits the entry that only Thursday's collection is delayed. The page does not print the make-up date.

The code layer is older. Troy City Code Chapter 16, Sec. 2.14(1), revised 10/15/2001, names New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day as the legal holidays and says that when a holiday occurs on a weekday, refuse collection "shall be made on the day following the regularly scheduled collection day." The same subsection still describes collection Monday through Friday and sends a Friday collection day to Saturday. The city's current page posts Monday through Thursday collection and lists the Friday holidays as no delay, so the city's 2026 list is the text that names this year's dates.

The Refuse page says refuse "can be placed at the curb no earlier than 5pm on the previous day and no later than 7am on your collection day," and asks that containers come in "no later than 24 hours after pickup." Code Sec. 2.14(2) bars refuse at the curb before 5:00 p.m. on the day preceding scheduled collection, and Sec. 2.14(3) sets the same twenty-four (24) hour limit for removing empty containers. Curbside yard waste "ends the week of December 14th on your regular collection day" and "will resume in April 2027," so Thanksgiving week is inside the yard waste season and the Christmas and New Year's dates fall after it ends.
