Troy, MI Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Season. Sec. 2.11(1) of the City Code describes yard recyclable collection as a 35-week season from mid-April through the first week in December, and leaves the yearly dates to the Public Works Director or a designated representative. The City's Yard Waste page prints the range as the week of April 7th through the week of December 14th, with no year. The Refuse & Recycling page carries the dated notice: collection ends the week of December 14th on your regular collection day and resumes in April 2027. Neither page prints zones or a week-by-week leaf calendar, so your regular refuse day is your leaf day.

Set-out rules. The Yard Waste page states that leaves must be bagged for collection. Yard waste is collected once a week on the same day as refuse and recycling, must be separated from trash, and goes out before 7am. Acceptable containers are paper yard waste bags or a can of 35 gallons or less with a City of Troy yard waste sticker, available free at any City building. Sec. 2.11(2) adds that the sticker faces the street, that the container sits at the curb on the opposite side of the driveway from the regular refuse by 7:00 a.m. on the normally scheduled collection day, and that the paper bags are 30 gallon. Under Sec. 2.11(3) the City will not collect yard waste packaged any other way, including plastic bags, and Sec. 2.11(4) bars using a container marked as yard recyclables for regular refuse.

Weight and size. Sec. 2.11(5) caps a yard recyclables container at 60 pounds. The Yard Waste page prints a lower limit of 50 lbs, citing SOCRRA's contract. Items must fit inside the container, under 3 feet in length. Brush or branches must be 2 inches in diameter or smaller and cut to less than 3 feet in length, bundled and tied. The City offers no chipping service for larger tree debris.

Holidays. Sec. 2.14(1) schedules collection of recyclable yard waste Monday through Friday beginning at 7:00 a.m., except on the legal holidays it lists. The City's 2026 holiday list says that when a holiday falls on a weekday (Monday - Thursday), collection for the holiday and the remaining days of that week is delayed by one day. Thanksgiving, Thursday 11/26/26, delays only Thursday's collection by one day. A private contractor, Tringali Sanitation, runs the route for the Refuse and Recycling Division.
