Troy, MI Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

City Code Chapter 16, Section 2.12 sets the placement requirements for curbside recycling. Recyclables must go in a City of Troy approved recycling bin, set at the curb on the opposite side of the driveway from the refuse container, by 7:00 a.m. on the normally scheduled collection day. Residents may instead use an approved container carrying a recyclables sticker, provided that container also meets the general and size/weight standards in Sections 2.4 and 2.5, meaning it must be portable, watertight, vermin-proof, with a tight-fitting cover, holding no more than 35 gallons, or a securely closed plastic bag holding up to 32 gallons. The sticker must face the street and the container must be clearly distinguished from the regular refuse container. Keeping recyclables physically separated from trash, on the far side of the driveway, is what lets Public Works crews run separate collection routes without cross-contaminating recyclable material with ordinary refuse.
