The Costa Mesa Sanitary District (CMSD) manages residential waste collection, with CR&R Environmental Services providing curbside pickup services. Regular collection occurs Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Each residence is assigned a specific collection day based on its address, which can be determined using the Solid Waste Collection Map on the CMSD website. Residents receive three carts: trash (black), recycling (blue), and organics/green waste (green). Bins should be placed curbside any time between 5:00 p.m. the day before collection and 7:00 a.m. on collection day. Carts must be placed with handles and wheels facing the home, side-by-side approximately one foot apart, and at least three feet from obstructions. No extra trash may be placed on top of, next to, or overflowing from carts. Residents must comply with California's SB 1383 organic waste recycling requirements, which mandate separation of food scraps and green waste. Holiday collection schedules may shift pickup days; CMSD publishes an annual holiday schedule. Bulky item pickup and household hazardous waste collection are available through separate programs. CR&R customer service is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Improper sorting, contamination of recycling bins, or placing bins out at incorrect times may result in non-collection, warning tags, or code enforcement action. Overflowing bins or extra trash left at the curb may also draw violations. Contact CR&R at (949) 646-4617 or CMSD at (949) 645-8400.
