Mission Viejo provides curbside trash, recycling, and green waste collection through Ware Disposal (now Republic Services). Residential pickup is once weekly. Carts must be placed at the curb by 6:00 AM on collection day and retrieved by 8:00 PM the same day.
Mission Viejo contracts with Ware Disposal (a Republic Services company) for residential solid waste collection. Single-family residents receive three carts: black (trash), blue (recycling), and green (green waste/organics). Collection occurs once weekly on assigned days. Carts must be placed at the curb by 6:00 AM on collection day with handles facing the house, lids closed, and at least 3 feet apart. Carts must be retrieved and stored out of public view by 8:00 PM the same day. Under SB 1383 (California's organic waste reduction law), food scraps go in the green cart along with yard waste. Standard service includes one of each cart size (35, 65, or 96 gallons). Additional carts or larger sizes may incur extra fees. Bulky item pickup is available by scheduling with Ware Disposal at (949) 642-1191. The city also provides free household hazardous waste disposal through Orange County HHW collection events. Contact Code Enforcement at (949) 470-3054 for cart violations.
Leaving carts at the curb past 8:00 PM on collection day is a code violation. Carts stored visibly in front yards or driveways violate property maintenance standards. Contaminating recycling or green waste carts may result in the load being rejected. Repeat offenders face administrative citations and fines.
