Skokie provides weekly residential trash and recycling collection through a contracted private hauler. Collection days vary by neighborhood. Carts must be at the curb by 7 AM on collection day with wheels against the curb and handles toward the home. Holiday collection is often delayed by one day.
Skokie contracts with a private waste hauler for weekly residential refuse and recycling collection. Each neighborhood has a designated collection day; residents can look up their collection day on the Village website or by contacting Public Works at (847) 933-8427. Carts must be at the curb by 7 AM on collection day; crews do not return for carts set out late. Carts should be placed with wheels against the curb, handles facing the home, and with at least 3 feet of clearance from obstacles. Maximum weight per cart is typically around 300 pounds. All refuse must fit inside the cart with the lid closed; extra bagged refuse set outside the cart may not be collected without an additional sticker or fee. Yard waste is collected in separate containers or biodegradable bags during the Illinois yard waste season (typically April through November) per state law. Holiday collection is often delayed by one day following the holiday; the Village publishes an annual holiday collection schedule. Missed pickups should be reported promptly to the hauler and to Public Works.
Setting out excess refuse beyond the cart without stickers may result in non-collection. Persistent violations of cart placement or content rules can result in property maintenance notices with fines from $75. Contaminated recycling may result in load rejection. Contact Public Works at (847) 933-8427.
