Smyrna, GA Trash & Recycling: Recycling Requirements (2026)

Section 86-2.2(c) of the Smyrna Code has the city or its contractor provide weekly collection of recyclable materials. The plastic container will be provided by the city, and the fee is included on the monthly sanitation bill from the city. Section 86-1 defines recyclable materials as plastic beverage bottles and jugs, glass bottles and jars, corrugated cardboard, newspaper, bimetal and aluminum cans, magazines, telephone books, automobile batteries, used motor oil, dry paint cans, metal, and large appliances.

Containers are covered by section 86-32.1. The city supplies 96-, 65- or 35-gallon roll-out containers to single-family developments as determined by the Mayor and Council. The retail cost to each customer is set by the Mayor and Council and kept on file in the office of the city clerk, and extra containers can be requested for an additional charge. Homeowners are responsible for sanitizing and cleaning their containers, and the city is not liable for damage to private containers used for yard waste or recycling services.

Several related rules limit what goes to the curb. Section 86-2.1 prohibits hazardous waste, items containing refrigerant, pressure cylinders, oxygen tanks, paint, rubber tires, yard waste, inert building material, motor oil and cooking oil from city disposal, to be taken to an appropriate recycling facility or approved landfill. Section 86-2.3 charges a per-item fee under the council's schedule for large appliances such as hot water heaters and stoves placed at the curb. Section 86-56 bars anyone other than city agents from hauling garbage or trash on city streets without a written permit from the Mayor and Council.
