Smyrna, GA Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Section 86-2.2(a) of the Smyrna Code says the city provides once weekly collection of garbage and dry solid waste. Chapter 86 fixes the frequency and prints no collection weekday. Section 86-1 defines garbage as vegetable matter, food scraps, baby diapers, food packaging, nonrecyclable materials and similar substances from kitchens, grocery stores, restaurants, drugstores and hotel rooms. Dry solid waste covers old furniture, appliances, Styrofoam, dog and cat litter, razor blades, wire, nonrecyclable plastics, glass and paper products, and other non-decomposable materials.

Service is mandatory. Section 86-31 requires every owner, occupant, tenant or lessee of a house, church, school, lodge or commercial business to provide and maintain garbage cans and receptacles of sufficient number and size, and in all cases to pay at least a minimum charge for garbage pickup, as adopted by the city council and on record with the city clerk. Section 86-4 places rates with the Mayor and Council, available through the city clerk's office, and rates adjust at the same percentage that the city's suppliers charge. Any person starting a business in the city pays a sanitation deposit under section 86-3, held until the final bill after the business closes.

Unpaid service has teeth. Section 86-6 bars an occupation tax certificate for anyone indebted to the city for garbage collection, and a suspension of service for nonpayment is grounds for revocation after a public hearing before the Mayor and Council. Section 86-31.1 sets the curbside window of 6:00 p.m. the evening before collection to 9:00 p.m. on collection day, and section 86-7 requires collection to be carried on in a systematic and efficient manner.
