Lauderhill, FL Trash & Recycling: Recycling Rules (2026)

City Code § 10-20 requires single-family customers to bundle newspapers separately with string, twine or a paper bag and to keep clear glass and aluminum cans segregated in the container the city's contracted waste hauler provides, set at curbside next to the regular trash on scheduled collection days. Newspapers cannot go in plastic bags or be mixed with magazines, phone books or glossy inserts. Multifamily properties place newspapers and cans in separate containers located near the bulk dumpster. Section 10-20(c) makes the service mandatory for all residents, not an opt-in program.

Section 10-21 makes it a violation for any unauthorized person, firm or corporation to collect or remove recyclables that have been set out for the city's program, with each unauthorized pickup treated as a separate offense, punishable under Section 10-21 by a fine of up to $500.00 or up to 90 days in the county jail, or both. Section 10-22 funds the program through a monthly fee billed with water and sewer charges: $7.66 per month for each single-family unit and $5.23 per month for each multifamily unit, covering newspapers, clear and colored glass, aluminum, steel cans and plastics #1 through #3.

The fee is tied to the Exclusive Residential Recycling Collection Service Franchise Agreement with Waste Management, most recently extended through September 30, 2026 by Resolution No. 24R-09-215, and can rise or fall under that agreement's formula.
