Ankeny, IA Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Under § 110.06, every owner or occupant must separate yard waste from all other solid waste accumulated on the premises before disposal. The section defines "yard waste" as any debris such as grass clippings, leaves, garden waste, brush, and trees, but excludes tree stumps from that definition. Separated yard waste has two lawful paths: composting on the property in accordance with § 110.07, or placement for collection under Chapter 113, the Solid Waste Enterprise Fund chapter that establishes the City's curbside recycling and leaf, tree, branch and miscellaneous item collection system.

Chapter 113 defines "leaf collection" as collection at approved sites and times the City sets for composting or other disposal, "tree and branch collection" as material approved by the City for collection, chipping and return to residents as mulch, and "miscellaneous item collection" as items collected at approved sites and times for disposal at the Metropolitan Landfill; every residential unit pays a monthly enterprise fund charge under § 113.03 to have this collection system available, billed on the combined utility account under § 92.08. Mixing yard waste into a regular solid waste container instead of separating it violates § 110.06 directly, and § 110.10 additionally requires that any waste storage container be maintained so materials do not blow or scatter into neighboring yards and streets.
