Phoenix offers an opt-in Green Organics container picked up weekly for an additional monthly fee. Yard trimmings, palm fronds, and cactus go inside; material is composted at the Resource Innovation Campus. No plastic bags; weight cap 200 pounds per cart.
Phoenix Public Works operates a voluntary Green Organics curbside program that residents can opt into for a small monthly fee added to the city utility bill. Enrolled households receive a 90-gallon green-lidded container collected weekly on the same day as the regular trash cart. Acceptable materials include grass clippings, leaves, weeds, palm fronds, branches, cactus, citrus and other yard trimmings. Branches must be cut to no longer than four feet and no thicker than four inches in diameter so that the lid fully closes. Total cart weight may not exceed 200 pounds. Plastic bags, dirt, rocks, sod, and treated lumber are prohibited. Material is hauled to the Phoenix 27th Avenue Resource Innovation Campus where it is processed into compost and mulch sold back through the city's Compost-A-Bin program, consistent with the Phoenix Zero Waste 2050 plan and Phoenix City Code Β§27-21. Christmas trees up to 6 feet may be cut down and placed in the green cart for two weeks after Christmas.
Contaminating the green container with plastic or trash leads to tagging and non-collection. Repeated violations may trigger removal from the program and citations of $100 to $500 under City Code Β§27-29 for illegal disposal.
