Pico Rivera Municipal Code Section 8.12.340 allows tree or garden trimmings to be placed in the same garbage and rubbish containers used for household waste, or in other substantial containers. If a resident chooses not to use a container, the trimmings must instead be tied into bundles, and those bundles are capped at two feet in diameter and five feet in length. Whether the trimmings go into a container or a bundle, the total weight is capped at fifty pounds per container or bundle, which sets a real limit on how much yard waste one set-out can hold.

The section also requires that a bundle contain nothing but tree or garden trimmings, so mixing in construction debris, dirt or other rubbish is not allowed within the same bundle. This bundling limit sits within the broader definitions of Section 8.12.020, which separately classifies logs, stumps or limbs exceeding four inches in diameter or three feet in length, along with sod or dirt, as 'exceptional materials' outside the routine garbage and rubbish collection system entirely, meaning genuinely oversized tree removal debris is not covered by the ordinary bundling rule and instead requires separate arrangement, typically through the city's contracted hauler or a hauling permit.

Because Chapter 8.12 places tree trimmings under the same placement and timing rules as garbage, the twelve-hour set-out and removal windows of Section 8.12.310 apply to yard-waste bundles left at the curb or alley just as they do to garbage cans.
