Casper, WY Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 15.28.010 adopts the NFPA 70-2023 Edition of the National Electrical Code for the city, administered by the city electrical inspector under Section 15.28.030. Section 15.28.050, the chapter's permit-required provision, requires all companies, firms, partnerships, corporations, individuals or entities doing electrical wiring for signs, fixtures, appliances or utilization equipment installed in or removed from a building or property to procure a permit from the city electrical inspector, with permits issued only to a contractor holding a valid, unexpired license of the proper category or, for private work, to an individual under Section 15.28.090.

It is unlawful to interfere with electric wiring without first securing a permit; failing to obtain one before starting work doubles the applicable permit fee. Permits expire if the authorized work is not commenced within one hundred eighty days and completed within one year, and a lapsed permit can be renewed within thirty days for half the original fee. Section 15.28.090 lets an owner pull a private-work permit for wiring in or about their own residential property if it is not a public place, place of business, or place of worship, and all the work is done with the owner's own hands; routine maintenance needs no permit, but any extension or modification of existing circuitry does.

Fees are calculated from a valuation of openings, motors and fixtures against the adopted building-permit fee schedule under Section 15.28.060 and set by city council resolution.
