Glen Cove, NY Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Chapter 132, Electrical Standards, governs electrical work citywide. Section 132-1 has the Building Department Administrator designate and authorize the electrical inspection agencies qualified to conduct inspections and reinspections of electrical installations, and sets the qualification requirements those agencies and their inspectors must meet; the cost of inspections is never charged to the city. Section 132-2 directs the inspector to report violations or deviations from the electrical provisions of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and this Code, with the National Electrical Code designated as the acceptable standard by the editor's note to that section.

The inspector authorizes a certificate of compliance once installations conform, and a copy goes to the Building Department Administrator. Section 132-4 lets the Building Department Administrator issue a one-year renewable exemption permit to a manufacturing operation that regularly employs a journeyman electrician, defined as someone with a completed apprenticeship, equivalent training, or at least three years of electrical work experience, where compliance with the ordinary inspection process would impose an undue burden. Section 132-5 exempts installations in mines, ships, railway cars, automotive equipment, utility infrastructure, and buildings owned or leased entirely by the federal or state government.
