Glen Cove, NY Building Safety: Building Inspections (2026)

Section 111-16 of the Glen Cove City Code requires the permittee or an agent to notify the Building Department Administrator in writing at least 24 hours before each of four defined construction stages is ready for inspection: excavation and footings, foundation walls, rough enclosed, and final for certificate of occupancy. Once that written notice is received, the Building Department Administrator must inspect within 48 hours. If the work has not been properly completed at the time of inspection and a reinspection becomes necessary, the permittee is charged $10 for each reinspection.

This staged-inspection structure exists to keep pace with a project's physical progress, since foundation and framing defects become difficult or impossible to verify once later work covers them, and the certificate-of-occupancy final inspection under § 111-14 cannot be requested until the earlier stage inspections are complete. Failure to call for inspection at the correct stage, or proceeding with covering work before the Building Department Administrator has signed off, exposes the project to the Building Department Administrator's broader powers under § 111-17 and § 111-18 to require corrective work, condemn unsafe conditions, or order the premises vacated, in addition to any fine for skipping the required stage.

Records of every inspection performed are kept as permanent official records under § 111-6 and are open to public inspection during business hours, and a monthly report on inspections and outstanding orders goes to the Mayor.
