Hoboken, NJ Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

The Electrical Subcode Official is one of the officials the City of Hoboken created within its Uniform Construction Code Agency under § 86-1 to enforce the state Uniform Construction Code, N.J.A.C. 5:23, for electrical work. Section 86-3B sets the electrical permit fee schedule the Subcode Official charges for that work: a $50 minimum fee applies to any electrical permit, with up to 25 fixtures or receptacles billed at $50 total and $25 for each additional 25 devices. Individual appliance circuits are billed separately, including $15 each for an electric range, oven, dishwasher, garbage disposal, clothes dryer in an apartment unit and window air conditioner.

Life-safety and communication devices such as burglar alarms, intercom panels, smoke detectors, pull stations and exit lights are billed at $40 for the first 15 devices and $2 for each additional device. Mechanical electrical loads carry their own fees: a water heater is $25, central heat is $30, central air-conditioning is $20, and heat pumps are $20. Service entrance work is billed at $65 for up to 200 amperes and $10 for each additional 100 amperes, and a motor control center or subpanel is billed at $30 for the first 100 amperes and $10 for each additional 100 amperes. These fees were last amended April 21, 2010 by Ordinance No. Z-34 and August 5, 2015 by Ordinance No. Z-363.
