Smyrna, GA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Section 18-96 requires a permit from the electrical inspector for any installation or alteration of the wiring in a building or structure for light, heat or power, or any increase in the rated load carried by those wires. The permit is issued only to a licensed electrical contractor, or to a person doing work in his or her own home without the assistance of any other person. Section 18-61 adopts the National Electrical Code published by the National Fire Protection Association, in the latest edition as adopted by the state, with three copies on file in the office of the building inspector.

Section 18-97 requires an application on forms furnished by the city before any work begins, with an accurate and detailed account of the work. Under § 18-98 the applicant files a written statement giving the location by street and number, the name of the person for whom the work is done and the scope of the work, then pays the fees. The electrical inspector issues the permit after approving the application and can require a general plan of construction. One permit covers one designated job and one building (§ 18-100), and added or increased load needs a new application (§ 18-99).

Fees are approved by the Mayor and Council, with the schedule kept on file in the building inspector's office (§ 18-101). Minor repairs involving no new work are exempt, but not new circuits or extensions of circuits (§ 18-69). Temporary wiring needs a written permit and lasts no more than 90 days (§ 18-114).
