Kenner, LA Building Safety: Fire Sprinkler Requirements (2026)

Kenner Code of Ordinances § 8-2(A) declares early warning smoke detection devices, alarm systems, and automatic sprinkler systems mandatory for all high-rise structures in the City of Kenner. Subsection (B) defines a high-rise building as any structure exceeding thirty-five feet in height, counting roof-level mechanical rooms and penthouses but not elevator or stair shafts, and subsection (C) applies the sprinkler mandate to every building above that thirty-five-foot line. Under subsection (C)(1), the sprinkler system covering the building must be complete and approved, designed to the National Fire Protection Association's NFPA 13 standard, and paired with a supervisory-type alarm system meeting NFPA 72-B, C, or D.

Shut-off valves and water-flow detection devices are required at the riser connection on every floor, each floor's water-flow activation must trigger an alarm that is also monitored by a central station, and the sprinkler riser is allowed to be combined with the fire department's standpipe riser rather than installed as a fully separate pipe run. The Code does permit specific rooms, such as generator and transformer rooms or telecommunications equipment areas, to skip sprinklers if they instead carry an approved automatic detection system and meet fire-separation requirements.

The City of Kenner Department of Regulatory Inspections and the Kenner Fire Department inspect for compliance, the mandate applies only to buildings constructed after the ordinance's effective date, and single-family dwellings are excluded under subsection (E)(5). Noncompliance is punished at $200 per day under subsection (E)(3), with each day treated as a separate violation.
