Sec. 74-555 permits only the industrial district to host adult bookstores, adult theaters, adult entertainment clubs and adult video stores; no other zoning district in the city allows these uses. Sec. 74-556 then layers three separate buffers on top of that district limit. First, an adult use cannot sit within 1,000 feet of a private school, public school, church, public park, public library, day care center or children's nursery. Second, it cannot sit within 1,200 feet of any other adult use listed in Sec. 74-555(b), preventing clustering.

Third, it cannot sit within 750 feet of any residential zoning district boundary. Distances are measured under Sec. 74-557 as a straight line from the nearest point of the proposed place of business, including its patron parking lot, to the nearest point of the protected use or district boundary. The buffers do not apply where the adult use is separated from the protected use by a county or state road of at least six lanes, or by an expressway; every other spacing rule in the Land Development Code, plus any stricter distance imposed by state statute, still applies.

An operator seeking relief from a state-imposed spacing requirement, rather than the city's own buffers, must take that request directly to the city council rather than through the standard special exception process. Sec. 74-558 exempts accredited educational and cultural institutions, museums and commercial photography studios using nude subjects.
