Davie enforces the Florida Building Code and Florida Fire Prevention Code, which require smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every story of a dwelling. Carbon monoxide alarms are required outside sleeping areas where fuel-burning appliances or attached garages are present.
The Town of Davie's Fire & Life Safety Division enforces the Florida Building Code, the Florida Fire Prevention Code, and NFPA Life Safety Codes and Standards, along with the Town's own Code of Ordinances. Under the Florida Building Code (Residential) Section R314, smoke alarms must be installed inside each sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms, and on each additional story of the dwelling, including basements and habitable attics. In new construction and major renovations, alarms must be hardwired with battery backup and interconnected so that activating one alarm sounds them all. Section R315 requires carbon monoxide alarms outside each separate sleeping area where the dwelling has fuel-burning appliances or an attached garage. Davie conducts annual fire inspections on all commercial and residential occupancies of three units or greater, as mandated by law, and its inspectors are State of Florida certified Firefighters and Fire Safety Inspectors. For existing single-family homes, maintaining working smoke alarms (testing monthly and replacing batteries) is both a code expectation and basic life safety. Landlords of multifamily and rental properties must keep required alarms installed and operational as a condition of passing Town fire inspections.
Missing, disabled, or nonfunctioning required smoke or carbon monoxide alarms are fire-code violations under the Florida Fire Prevention Code and Florida Building Code, enforced by Davie's Fire & Life Safety Division. Multifamily and rental properties failing annual fire inspection for alarm deficiencies must correct them or face enforcement.
