Pocatello, ID Parking Rules: Abandoned Vehicles (2026)

Section 8.14.050(B) declares that the presence, outside an enclosed building, of an inoperative, wrecked, discarded, partially dismantled or junked vehicle or vehicle parts on private property is a nuisance because it contributes to blight and creates hazards from broken glass, standing water, rusted parts and vermin. No responsible party may allow such a vehicle to remain in the open for longer than seventy-two (72) hours. The rule does not reach vehicles at a lawfully operated auto salvage, towing and storage, or auto sales business, or a government storage yard, nor vehicles covered by a repair or restoration permit.

Section 8.14.050(C) lets code enforcement staff issue a free thirty-day repair permit (with one 30-day extension) to an owner repairing one vehicle using parts salvaged from another vehicle they own, or a one-year restoration permit for a 'classic' car at least 25 years old or an 'Idaho old timer' built before January 1, 1943 (with one 180-day extension). While permitted and not under active repair, the vehicle must be under a form-fitted car cover, not a tarp or blanket, and parts must be neatly stacked and covered. Code enforcement can deny or revoke a permit if the property is otherwise out of compliance with property-maintenance rules in Chapter 8.14.
