Pocatello, ID Parking Rules: RV & Boat Parking (2026)

Pocatello City Code Chapter 10.42 governs recreational vehicles, defined at 10.42.010 as motor homes, travel trailers, and truck campers or camping trailers designed for human habitation for recreational occupancy, excluding pickup hoods, shells or canopies. Section 10.42.020 bars using an RV or boat as a permanent residence, allowing only temporary living quarters while occupants are engaged in recreational activities. Section 10.42.030 limits on-street parking on the public right of way to a maximum of seventy two hours for loading, unloading or preparing the vehicle for use; boats on trailers may park there only while hitched to a lawfully registered, operating motor vehicle, and unhitched trailers or unmounted truck camper units may not be parked on the right of way at all.

Section 10.42.040 sets the basic off-street rule: units may sit anywhere on the premises for up to seventy two hours while actively loading or preparing for use, but longer-term residential storage must follow a preferred order of garages or carports first, then the rear yard, then the side yard, provided the parking does not otherwise violate nuisance or parking codes. Section 10.42.050 allows front-yard parking only when no rear or side yard space is reasonably accessible, and imposes conditions: a prepared surface must be provided, the unit must park perpendicular to the front curb (unless on a circular drive), no part may extend over the sidewalk, curb or right of way, the unit cannot exceed ten feet in width or forty feet in length, and it cannot obstruct sight distance at intersections.

Section 10.42.060 further bars using a parked RV for storing goods or materials beyond items essential to its use, and caps dwelling use in the unit at fourteen days per calendar year with no compensation received, no cooking, and no permanent sewer, water or electrical hookups (temporary charging connections are allowed).
