Pocatello, ID Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Section 8.14.050(A), 'Parking/Storage On Private Property,' states that vehicles may not be parked on lawns or landscaping areas and must instead be parked on a driveway built in accordance with applicable building codes and city regulations, accessed by an approved approach or curb cut, or alternatively on another prepared surface reachable from a driveway or alleyway. The chapter's definitions section, § 8.14.020, ties this to what counts as a lawful surface: a 'PREPARED SURFACE' is ground covered by gravel, concrete, asphalt, composite permeable pavers, porous pavement or concrete, or an open-celled paving grid system installed to industry standards, with bare dirt specifically excluded, while a 'DRIVEWAY' is a prepared surface of concrete, brick or asphalt leading to a street or alley through an approved approach or curb cut.

Parking on unimproved dirt, gravel dumped without a grid system, or straight onto grass therefore does not satisfy the rule. The same section's canopy provision, § 8.14.040(G), reinforces this by requiring that any carport-style canopy used to shelter a vehicle sit on a lawfully constructed driveway or other prepared surface, not directly on lawn.
