Sun Prairie, WI Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 10.16.080 of the Sun Prairie Municipal Code, titled Heavy Vehicles, works on a weight trigger and a length trigger, and either is enough on its own. The weight trigger is a vehicle, or a combination of vehicles, in excess of 10,000 pounds. The length trigger is over 22 feet. A truck that is short but heavy is caught by the weight limit, and a rig that is light but long is caught by the length limit. Because the text says combination of vehicles, a pickup with a trailer hitched to it is measured as a single unit, so an ordinary pickup that would be fine on its own becomes a prohibited combination once the trailer pushes the pair past 22 feet or past 10,000 pounds.

The ban covers any street, avenue, or public way in the City, which means it is written around the public right of way rather than around zoning districts. A residential street in Sun Prairie is covered, and so is every other public street, with a single exception: a street in a business district. On those streets the heavy vehicle prohibition does not apply.

The section also builds in a narrow permission path. In 1-hour parking zones, a heavy vehicle may be allowed to park between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m., but only if permission is granted case-by-case. That request goes through the Sun Prairie police non-emergency line at 608-837-7336, and nothing in the section promises approval. Outside that window and outside business district streets, the section leaves no standing exception, so the default for a heavy or long vehicle on a Sun Prairie street is that it cannot park there.
