Piscataway, NJ Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Added by Ord. No. 2019-29 and amended December 19, 2023 by Ord. No. 2023-34, § 7-8.3, "Number of Cars Parked on Lawn; Permit Requirement," lets residents park "no more than two motor vehicles on the non-paved areas of the front, side, and/or back yard" of their property for up to 24 hours without any permit. Beyond that, subsection b requires a lawn parking permit issued by the Township Code Official, subject to review by the Director of Public Safety, the Zoning Officer, Fire Safety "and any other department or officer that Township deems necessary," for any property with two or more cars on unpaved yard areas or where the owner collects revenue for yard parking.

Applications under subsection c must come from the property owner, state the maximum number of lawn spots, include an ingress/egress drawing or survey, and carry a $25 fee; approved permits run for one year. Subsection d requires the owner to carry Commercial General Liability and Auto Liability coverage of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence, naming the Township as certificate holder. A denied applicant may appeal in writing to the Office of the Township Administrator within 10 days under subsection e, and the Business Administrator or a designee must decide the appeal within 30 days.

The Department of Public Safety enforces the section under subsection f, and unpermitted lawn parking escalates from a warning on the first violation to $30, $50, $75, $100, $125 and $150 per car on the second through seventh violations, capping at $200 per car for an eighth or later violation, with each separate occurrence counted as its own violation.
