Piscataway, NJ Parking Rules: Preferential Parking Districts (2026)

Section 7-17, "Residential Parking Permits" (Ord. No. 10-27, amended by Ord. No. 13-22 and Ord. No. 2020-28), sets out a general permit system that applies to whichever streets get added to the schedule at § 7-17.8. Section 7-17.1 bars parking on a listed street during its designated hours unless the vehicle displays "a current residential parking permit on its left rear window" or falls under an exemption. Section 7-17.2 exempts visitor-permit vehicles for a maximum of two days, contractor, service and delivery vehicles bearing a business name and address while rendering service, and emergency or public utility vehicles while working in the area.

Section 7-17.3 lets the Business Administrator recommend a street for inclusion once a traffic study shows outside vehicles average more than 25% of the street's parking spaces and total occupancy exceeds 65% of spaces on weekdays. Section 7-17.4 sets permit terms: a permanent permit good for up to one year for tenants or three years for owner-occupants covers every vehicle a resident owns or principally operates, while one visitor permit per residential unit, capped at two per structure (three if owner-occupied), runs for one year and is renewable.

Section 7-17.5 bars copying, counterfeiting or knowingly displaying a fake permit, or giving false information on an application, with conviction carrying a fine up to $500 and/or up to 10 days imprisonment plus a three-year forfeiture of permit eligibility; three or more outstanding summonses under the section bar issuance of a new permit. Section 7-17.6 clarifies that holding a permit doesn't excuse a resident from other parking rules, such as standing too close to a stop sign or intersection.
