Mesa promotes EV infrastructure with a special time-of-use electric rate and is developing building code requirements for EV-ready parking in new residential and commercial developments.
Mesa offers an Electric Vehicle Time of Use Rate for residents who charge EVs at home, providing lower electricity costs during off-peak hours. The city received an $11.8 million federal grant to expand its public EV charging network. For new multifamily developments, Mesa staff has recommended 5% of parking with full EV infrastructure and 10% EV-capable. Single-family builders commonly provide 240-volt EV-ready outlets as an option. Residential EV charger installation requires an electrical permit and must comply with the National Electrical Code. Mesa has over 255 public charging ports across the city.
Residential EV charger installations without required electrical permits are subject to code enforcement. No penalties exist for simply owning or charging an electric vehicle.
