Perth Amboy, NJ Parking Rules: Preferential Parking Districts (2026)

Section 414-8.1 of the Perth Amboy traffic chapter, added 3-3-81 by Ord. No. 269-81, creates residential permit parking. On any street or part of a street in Schedule VA (§ 414-35.1), no vehicle can park during the scheduled hours, every day of the week, for more than two hours unless the vehicle is owned or operated on a regular basis by a resident of that street, displays a current residential parking permit on its left rear side window where an officer can closely examine it, or falls under an exception. Schedule VA sets the hours street by street. Andrews Drive, both sides from Rudyard Drive to Clark Avenue, is restricted Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. (added 10-9-2019 by Ord. No. 1921-2019).

Two groups are exempt. Contractors, service and delivery vehicles bearing the name and address of a commercial business can park without a permit while rendering service to a residence in the permit area. Emergency vehicles and public service, telephone and other public utility vehicles can park there while rendering service or repairs.

The code also sets how a street qualifies. When the Mayor or his designee determines that streets serving residential land uses are used by non-resident drivers, and an engineering or traffic study shows the average number of those vehicles exceeds 25% of the parking spaces and total occupied spaces exceed 65% on weekdays of any month, the Mayor or designee recommends the street to the City Council for inclusion.

Applications are made in writing on forms from the Perth Amboy Parking Authority (amended 6-14-2006 by Ord. No. 1348-2006). A resident receives a permanent permit valid for one year for every vehicle owned or principally operated by that person, and a permit expires on December 31 of the year designated on the decal.
