Lyon County, NV Public Conduct: Jaywalking (2026)

Lyon County Code § 8.05.02.B, 'Crossing at Other Than Crosswalks,' governs jaywalking in unincorporated Lyon County, Nevada: a pedestrian who crosses a roadway anywhere other than within a marked crosswalk or an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection must yield the right of way to all vehicles already on the roadway, and may not cross at any place other than a route at right angles to the curb or by the shortest path to the opposite curb. The subsection does not excuse a driver's separate duty of due care for pedestrian safety, so the yield obligation runs against the pedestrian without eliminating a driver's liability for careless driving under § 8.03.11.

The chapter also bars a pedestrian from suddenly leaving a curb into the path of a vehicle too close to stop under § 8.05.02.D, and at signal-controlled intersections § 8.05.02.C separately forbids crossing against a red or stop signal even inside a marked crosswalk. Read together, the sections give the Lyon County Sheriff's Office three distinct pedestrian violations to cite on county roads through Dayton, Silver Springs, Stagecoach, Mound House and Smith Valley: crossing outside a crosswalk without yielding, crossing against a signal, and stepping suddenly into traffic.
