Fontana, CA Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Sec. 17-4 of the Fontana Municipal Code regulates skateboards, roller skates and "other similar devices" alongside bicycles and animal-drawn vehicles. Subsection (d) forbids riding, operating, using, parking or leaving a skateboard or roller skate on any sidewalk in a business district. Subsection (k) layers on a broader set of rules covering streets, alleys, bridges, sidewalks, rights-of-way, parks and playgrounds citywide: no use on a street or roadway in a business district; no use after sunset or before sunrise; no riding near blind grades or curves; only one person per device at a time; riders must yield to vehicles and pedestrians; use must stay upright; and ramps, jumps or "acrobatics" (defined to include spins, loops, 360-degree turns and handstands) off the pavement are unlawful unless the rider has obtained a city permit.

Riders also owe skateboards, roller skates and other similar devices the same duties as a vehicle driver under the state Vehicle Code, except where those duties cannot apply. Subsection (m) authorizes the enforcing officer to seize any device used in violation of the section, or in a manner that creates a safety or traffic hazard, and hold it until the prosecuting attorney determines it is no longer needed as evidence, at which point the city notifies the owner (or a minor's parent or guardian) that it may be reclaimed.
