Lynwood, CA Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Adopted by Ordinance #1553, § 3-26 lets the City Engineer, or a private property owner, post signs banning skateboarding, "grinding," and riding push scooters or motor-driven scooters in a defined area; § 3-26.3 then makes it unlawful to ride, use, propel, or operate a skateboard, or to grind, on any sidewalk or other public or private property carrying that posted sign. Section 3-26.2 defines "skateboard" broadly to include push scooters and motor-driven scooters, any board with wheels intended to be ridden by standing or sitting, and defines "grinding" as sliding on a monument, sign, building, railing, fence, bench, planter, curb, stairway, or similar angled object using a nonrolling part of the board.

Section 3-26.4 sets the posting specifications: the city engineer posts city property while a private property owner is responsible for posting private property, and each sign must be at least eighteen by twenty-four inches, with letters at least one inch tall reading "SKATEBOARDING PROHIBITED" and, underneath, "Violators will be Cited - LMC Ord. No." Section 3-26.5 makes a violation an infraction punishable under the Code's general penalty provision, § 1-5. Section 3-26.6 authorizes the Lynwood Sheriff's Department and Lynwood public safety officers to respond to complaints, observe violations, and issue citations.

This posted-area ban is distinct from the City's separate public skate park facility rules in § 3-24, which govern hours, protective gear, and conduct at any City-designated skate park.
