Full Breakdown

" Skateboards are therefore held to the same 15 mph ceiling as bicycles and scooters on Sammamish trails and in parks, with a lower 8 mph limit for associated marine areas under subsection (2). 020, separately bars "traveling in a negligent manner," defined as any form of travel "in such a manner as to endanger or be likely to endanger any persons or property," and that offense is a criminal misdemeanor rather than a civil offense, a materially harsher penalty than exceeding the speed cap alone. Both speed-and-travel sections were adopted by Ordinance O2021-531 § 3 (Att. 19.

Violations & Fines

Skateboarding faster than 15 mph in a Sammamish park, trail, or open space, or at a speed unreasonable for conditions, is a civil offense under § 7A.08.010(3). Skateboarding in a way that endangers people or property crosses into "traveling in a negligent manner" under § 7A.08.020, a criminal misdemeanor, a materially harsher charge than the ordinary speed-limit civil offense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a skateboard speed limit in Sammamish parks?
Yes. Sammamish Municipal Code § 7A.08.010(1) sets a 15 mph speed ceiling for all forms of travel in city open spaces, trails, park areas and park facilities, and the section specifically lists "skateboard" among the covered modes of travel alongside bicycles, scooters and roller skates. Exceeding that speed, or traveling faster than conditions allow, is a civil offense.
Can I be cited for reckless skateboarding even under 15 mph?
Yes. Section 7A.08.020 separately bans traveling "in such a manner as to endanger or be likely to endanger any persons or property," regardless of speed, and classifies that as a criminal misdemeanor. A skateboarder weaving through pedestrians dangerously could be cited under this negligent-travel section even while under the numeric speed cap.
Does the 15 mph rule apply on Sammamish's marine areas too?
No, a lower limit applies. Section 7A.08.010(2) sets an 8 mph speed cap for associated marine areas, covering boats, motor-powered craft, watercraft, and other mobility devices, separate from the 15 mph limit that governs trails, parks, open spaces and park facilities under subsection (1).
