Inglewood, CA Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Municipal Code Section 12-81 creates a narrow exception, on top of the City's general sign rules, letting Inglewood permit large informational signs at strategic locations abutting freeway rights-of-way. The stated purpose is to help motorists find large-attendance sports or entertainment venues, and the section limits what these special venue freeway signs may show: the names of one or more venues that can seat 10,000 or more patrons; event details such as dates, times, performers, sponsors, ticket prices, and availability; general community and City event information; and, subject to CalTrans rules, other businesses in the former redevelopment project areas.

Every special venue freeway sign requires Special Use Permit approval and must be located within a former adopted redevelopment project area. The code also imposes strict spacing and buffer rules: no such sign may sit within one mile of another special venue freeway sign anywhere in the City, and none may be located closer to a residential (R or P) zone than twice the sign's total structure height. Height is capped by the Special Use Permit itself but can never exceed 120 feet above grade at the sign's base.

With Special Use Permit approval and CalTrans sign-off, the display may include animated graphics or changeable copy, which is otherwise tightly restricted for other sign types under Article 23. Given Inglewood's status as home to SoFi Stadium, the Kia Forum, and the Intuit Dome, Section 12-81 exists specifically to route event traffic and ticket-holders off the freeway toward those venues rather than to serve general advertising purposes.
