Summary

Shreveport lets you post one garage sale sign on the property holding the sale, with no permit. Off-premise directional signs at intersections are prohibited outright and the city may remove them without notice.

When a garage/yard sale is conducted as part of a residential use, an additional temporary sign is permitted. Such additional temporary signs must be located on the site of the garage/yard sale, and may be installed 48 hours prior to event and must be removed within 24 hours of the end of the sale.

Full Breakdown

Under UDC Section 9.6.C.2 a garage or yard sale conducted as part of a residential use gets one additional temporary sign per lot. The sign is capped at six square feet, freestanding versions at five feet tall and within five feet of a lot line, and it may not be illuminated. Wall versions may be mounted on a fence. Timing is fixed: up 48 hours before the sale, down within 24 hours after it ends. Table 9-1 lists this sign type as requiring no permit. Section 9.4.H bans all temporary off-premise signs, which covers arrow signs stapled to poles blocks away.

Violations & Fines

Off-premise garage sale signs are declared abandoned trash on posting and may be discarded without notice. Code violations carry fines up to $1,000, each day a separate offense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put arrow signs at the corner to direct people to my sale?
No. UDC Section 9.4.H prohibits all temporary off-premise signs and declares them abandoned trash at the time of posting. Any citizen may remove them, and the city discards them without notice.
How early can I put the sign out?
Forty-eight hours before the sale. It must come down within 24 hours of the end of the sale under UDC Section 9.6.C.2.a.
Do I need a permit for the sign or the sale?
No sign permit. Table 9-1 lists the garage sale sign under signs requiring no permit, so long as it stays within the size, height and timing limits.
