Canton, OH Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Section 975.07(a), Location of Waste for Pickup, part of the Solid Waste Management System adopted by Ordinance 132-2020, fixes the window in which Canton residents may set out and must remove their garbage cans. Cans and solid waste cannot go to the collection site or curb before noon the day before the scheduled pickup, and any waste not set out by 6:00 a.m. on collection day itself may be skipped until the following week. Once collection happens, the resident must pull the cans back from the curb no later than 8:00 a.m. the following day; leaving them out longer is a violation.

Backyard or alley pickup is allowed only with prior approval from the Director of Public Service or a designee. The containers themselves must meet the Section 975.01(a) definition of an "approved container," a galvanized, heavy-duty rubber or heavy-duty plastic can with a separate lid and handles and, if resident-supplied, a maximum 32-gallon capacity able to hold its shape through temperature extremes; Section 975.05(a) further requires the container to be secured at all times against animals. Section 975.06 makes the property owner responsible for maintaining containers in a nuisance- and odor-free condition and for any theft, fire or damage once a container is placed on the property.
