Canton, OH Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Canton Codified Ordinances 351.23, Contractor Parking Permits, governs commercial dumpsters placed at metered parking spaces for downtown construction projects. The Director of Public Safety is authorized to issue the permits, and applications go to the Director or a designee on prescribed forms. Each permit covers one dumpster or commercial vehicle for a full calendar month, at a flat fee of fifty dollars per month for each meter space occupied; the fee is not prorated even if the dumpster only sits there for part of the month.

Permits are not transferable between contractors, though they can move between a single contractor's vehicles, and the permit must be prominently displayed on the dumpster or vehicle. The Director has discretion to set size and weight restrictions, specify exactly where on-street the dumpster may sit, and deny a permit outright based on parking, traffic or other relevant circumstances, giving City Hall real leverage over sidewalk and lane obstruction downtown. A dumpster or vehicle displaying a valid permit is exempt from the coin-deposit and time-limit meter rules in Sections 353.05 and 353.07, meaning the contractor does not have to feed the meter for that space once permitted.

The provision traces to Ordinance 228-93 (1993) with the fee and permit-transfer language updated by Ordinance 162-2008, and it sits within Chapter 351's parking rules rather than the City's solid-waste code, so it specifically addresses dumpsters occupying public street space rather than dumpster placement on private lots.
