Canton, OH Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Chapter 975, Solid Waste Management System, adopted by Ordinance 132-2020, puts the Sanitation Department in charge of collecting and disposing of residential solid waste city-wide under Section 975.02. Section 975.04(a) sets weekly collection as the standard for single-family homes, while Section 975.04(b) and (c) require at least weekly collection for general commercial structures and multi-family buildings, with more frequent pickups allowed if containers are overflowing after ten days' written notice to the owner. Section 975.03(d), Exclusive Service, requires every single-family and multi-family residential unit to use the City's collection service and bars private collection of household waste unless the Director of Public Service determines doing so is impossible or impracticable; commercial structures, by contrast, may use a private hauler under Section 975.03(e).

Rates are set under Section 975.08(a)(1) at $22.00 per unit monthly inside the City and $25.50 outside it, adjusted each year for the Consumer Price Index, with a homestead discount available under Section 975.081 for qualifying disabled or senior residents. Anyone offering private hauling service in Canton must hold a City permit under Section 975.11, renewed annually for a $50.00 nonrefundable fee.
