Milton, WI Trash & Recycling: Bin Placement Rules (2026)

Section 62-12 of the Milton Code of Ordinances requires each residential unit to provide appropriate garbage containers or bags, either watertight cans up to 33 gallons with tight-fitting covers or sufficiently durable, tightly tied plastic bags, and caps the combined weight of any single container or bag plus its contents at 50 pounds. There is no limit on how many containers a household can set out. Containers must stay in good, clean and sanitary condition, with damaged cans replaced. Section 62-12(c) requires occupants to return garbage and recycling containers to their storage point within 12 hours after collection, and Section 62-12(d) flatly bars any outdoor storage of containers in front of residential units at other times.

Section 62-14(a) sets the placement itself: collection is curbside, except for hardship pickups the city or its contractor may authorize for residents determined to be disabled and unable to bring materials to the curb. Section 62-19(e) adds a related traffic restriction: no parking is allowed within 15 feet of a city garbage or recycling cart, though the police department enforces that rule only when the department of public works files a complaint, not on routine patrol. Together these sections, all adopted or amended under Ordinance No. 228 in 2006, keep the curbside collection zone clear and keep carts from becoming a permanent front-yard fixture between pickups.
