Toledo, OH Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Toledo's bulk collection changed on January 5, 2026. Under the City's current published rules, residents "can place up to 5 bulk items at the curb each week with their regularly scheduled trash pickup," and "Each item must weigh under 40 lbs." The City states that this "weekly bulk pick-up replaces the monthly scheduled bulk pick-ups previously offered" and that residents "no longer need to schedule with Republic Services and can place items at the curb each week." The last day to schedule a pickup under the old system was December 30, 2025.

Preparation matters, because crews will leave non-compliant material behind. The City requires residents to bag loose trash, to "Tie branches, wood, or rugs in a 3' x 4' bundle," to "Remove or pound flat any nails or screws in wood items," and to "Bag or wrap mattresses." Collection is curbside only: the City notes "No alley or side street pick-up," so items set out in an alley or on a side street will not be taken even if they otherwise comply.

The exclusion list is specific. Toledo will not collect loose, unbagged or unbundled debris; tires; hazardous waste including gas, paint, liquids and medical waste; major car parts; commercial construction material; boards with nails or screws; or any item or bundle over 40 lbs. The City warns that "Items that cannot be collected will be left at the curb and residents may be fined," so a rejected item stays the resident's problem and can turn into a nuisance citation rather than simply waiting for the next run.

Two notes for anyone reading older guidance. First, the service is operated under contract by Republic Services, and questions go to Republic at 419-936-2511 rather than to a City department. Second, the codified text has not caught up. Appendix D Section 209 of the Toledo Municipal Code still describes a "Collection of Oversized or Bulky Items" service requiring a scheduled pick-up at least 48 business hours in advance, limited to once per quarter, with a $50 charge for a second collection in the same quarter. That scheduled service is no longer in operation. Appendix D Section 101 provides that these regulations are issued by the Director of Public Service, which is why the City's currently published rules govern day to day while the appendix text lags behind. The bundling dimensions changed with the switch as well: the appendix specifies bundles up to six feet long and two feet in diameter, while the current rule is a 3' x 4' bundle.

Clear-outs larger than five items per week are handled separately. Hoffman Road Landfill runs free disposal days at which residents may bring a truck or trailer load of bulky solid waste, including furniture, carpeting, mattresses, wood waste and scrap metal, on proof of residency with a current utility bill and valid photo ID. Commercial loads are not accepted free of charge.
